Tutorial: At Home Shoot With Natural Light

This shoot only took us about 20-30 minutes is all.  We just went into the room that has the best lighting and then started setting up.  She had a simple bed spread so it worked great with the shoot because it's not distracting at all and doesn't take away from the babies.  We put the babies on the bed and faced them towards the light and then starting clicking away.

Tip: If you are new to photography and you aren't used to your camera settings yet, I would first set up a toy on the bed and get the settings right before you start using live models :)  Especially babies.  This way you don't loose any precious time during your shoot.  Once you get the right light and settings on your camera then get started.  All photos were taken with a Canon Mark II 5D with a Canon 24-70 mm Lens

This pictures is taken facing the light.  Look how natural the light is and how there are no shadows that are falling on her face.  This is her looking at me while I am playing peek a boo with her.  If you are trying to get a shot where they are looking right at you, make sure you don't have anyone else behind you to distract them.  Play games with them and make noise so you are keeping their attention.

We had a friend helping out with this shoot, She was teasing her and making her laugh so we got some really cute candid shots.  This works great when they are loosing their attention.

Get the details.  This is something they were doing naturally so make sure you are always ready to take a picture or else you will miss it.

If all else fails bring in some toys.  Also notice a mistake I made in the picture to the right of the screen.  If you notice her face is lit up but her hands are in the shadows that's because I am standing in my own light.  Make sure you aren't casting a shadow on your subject or else the pictures won't look clean and even.

This is a picture of them no longer facing the window.  The window light is coming from the side so you get some shadows, but it adds a journalistic style to the shoot.

Be ready at all times or you miss shots like these :)  Tip:  When taking pictures of babies and toddlers take a lot of pictures and make it quick.  You don't have all day to keep them happy.  Get in and get it done and everyone will be happy.
